Cyber Center Bringing Innovation and Information to Farmers

 

Colombo, February 2011, An inaugural ceremony was held by the Sri Lanka Department of Agriculture for the opening of 19 cyber centers as part of their internet-based agriculture extension program. This is a pioneering initiative that introduced innovative practices in developing the agriculture sectors and promoting economic growth. Gracing the event were H.E. the President Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse, Hon. Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director, Mr. James Bednaralong with other Sri Lanka and US Government representatives.

USAID/CORE supports IT sector employment opportunities for youth in Eastern Province

 

Colombo - May 28, 2010: - For the first time, a multinational IT company will open a major production center in Sri Lanka's Eastern Province. With financial and technical support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a new software product development center, Advanced Information Consulting (Pvt) Ltd., has been established in Akkaraipattu, in the Ampara District. The center will create employment opportunities for youth graduating from local educational facilities in the Eastern Province.

U.S Government research to boost Sri Lanka's dairy sector

 

Colombo-April, 2010:- The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has conducted a study of Sri Lanka's dairy sector aiming to help small dairy farmers improve their businesses. The study, which helped to identify the areas for dairy market improvements and the obstacles that need to be addressed, finds that dairy yield can substantially be increased with a concerted effort from the public and private sector.

U.S. Government study identifies aquaculture opportunities in Eastern Sri Lanka

 

Colombo-March, 2010:- A United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded study report has identified investment opportunities in the aquaculture sector in the Eastern Province. This report also identifies aquaculture products that are most suitable for export and obstacles that must be overcome to encourage investment and development by the private sector.

USAID/CORE Successfully Links Farmers in the East with New Opportunities

 

Colombo – February 12, 2010: - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is linking more than 2,000 farmers in Ampara and Monaragala Districts to new markets for a special variety of papaya, providing supplemental income to participating families. U.S Ambassador Patricia A. Butenis and USAID Mission Director Rebecca Cohn met recently with some of the participants in Monaragala District.

Colombo – November 16, 2009: The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) supported the study of six industry sectors including Dairy, Horticulture, Fisheries, Aquaculture, Tourism, and Logistics to identify growth opportunities in the East for the private sector. The recommendations of the six sector assessments were released by USAID to key stakeholders in the government, private sector, and other industries.

USAID supports a Career day for youth in the East

 

Colombo – November 9, 2009 – The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is holding a career day in Trincomalee to provide job-oriented training and internship opportunities for youth in the Eastern Province. The career day called "Connect to Your Future", will be held on November 12, 2009, at the Hindu Cultural Hall on Inner Harbor Road, Trincomalee. Youth from all communities are invited to register and attend the event.

USAID/CORE Assistance Increases Milk Supply to the New CIC Yoghurt and Curd Factory in Batticaloa

 

Colombo, October 23, 2009: –The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through its economic development project has established a dairy farmer network in Punani, Batticaloa. USAID partnered with the CIC Mahaweli Livestock & Dairy, a subsidiary of the CIC Agribusiness Ltd., to launch a new yoghurt and curd factory at the Siddapura farm in Punani, Batticaloa.
