USAID Sri Lanka's Connecting Regional Economies (CORE) project is a part of the U.S. government's integrated strategy designed to promote economic growth in the Eastern, North-Central, and Uva Provinces of Sri Lanka.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded project, Connecting Regional Economies (USAID/CORE), assists beneficiaries in the Eastern, North-Central, and Uva Provinces of Sri Lanka to integrate into mainstream economic activities. Competitiveness of selected value chains in these provinces are enhanced through introduction of technology and increases in productivity, leading to an increase in income, creation of sustainable jobs and formation of business opportunities. A demand-driven approach is applied to support market linkages while also supporting beneficiaries at the grassroots level. Knowledge and skills are enhanced to empower beneficiaries to better participate in their respective value chains. In addition, policy and regulatory impediments to growth in these value chains are addressed to create a positive business enabling environment.
USAID seeks to spur economic growth for all Sri Lankans through partnerships with the private sector. Building on a successful track record, USAID programs are developing public-private partnerships, creating sustainable jobs, and jump-starting much needed economic growth, particularly in Eastern Sri Lanka.
In late 2008, USAID launched a new multi-year program, Connecting Regional Economies (CORE).
